Elder Britsch's Letters from July 16th - 29th

Dear family, July 16th, 2009
We had Zone conference yesterday. We had a big testimony meeting for part of it. It was a sweet experience! It is wonderful to be part of such an outpouring of great testimonies and training with the spirit to confirm it. I was very touched. We have so many good missionaries in our mission. 19 missionaries are returning this transfer. We have 6 koreans coming in. Life in 부평 is still great. This week we had a lot of cancelations because of rain and other reasons. We missed out on some planned lessons with members because of the cancelations. However, we had lots of special experiences that took their place. On Sunday we had 2 investigators (one of whom came with his dad) come to church and an american (13yr old girl) who is doing home stay come as well. She brought her nonmember homestay family but they left shortly after arriving so that they could go to their church. But not before talking to many of the members. We also taught our investigator's dad with our w.m.l. It resulted in him liking our chuch enough to let his son come again. We are close to having a set date with the other investigator who came to church. We gave him one but he has a standardized test that day so we are rescheduling. We've also seen good results knocking. We taught 2 families who invited us in last week. We had a women who we are teaching with her husband home, have a really good impression from the restoration dvd. Unfortunately, she afterward said she was happy but very confused and said she wasn't ready to pray. We are still meeting with her and see great potential in her and her husband. Elder Hatfield is still doing great. He reminds me of Hunter, talks my ear off, but I love it. I'm scared to hear hunter's man voice. We just came back from the temple. We go every 6 weeks. I'm still loving the nutella like the middle school girls love Hunter. And just like Hunter, "I eat it up." Courts going to be a rich Helaman girl after all. So sad. Heritage is the best. hope the classes work out. Dad, thanks for you letter. Great words. Our heritage is so important. I've thought and learned a lot more about mine. I too wish the youth appreciated the gospel more. the same thing happens in korea.

Dear Fam, July 23rd, 2009
Thanks for the update. Glad you finally made it home. The family history is great. Korean family history dates back milleniums. Its amazing. I hope you have fun with Danni. I have very little time today but I wish to express a little of what has been happening. We have given 2 baptismal dates this week. We hope to see them kept. Both are 2 young men who have come to church and we've been teaching this transfer. The time is really flying by. Of course the heat is intense and I'm exhausted at the end of everyday but I love it. It feels great to give so much in a day and then go to bed feeling and knowing you did all you could. I pray for you daily. My companion is a great missionary and help to the work. He's very happy and positive. I love you but must go at this time.

Dear Family, July 29th, 2009
Another week has passed and so fast. Our investigators with baptismal dates are having some complications. One of them could not obtain permission. His mom said he is too young to choose a religion. She and her husband do not have one. However, he will attend youth conference this weekend and hopefully have a great time. Our other candidate said that his belief is not strong enough yet. He is keeping the commandments out of logic and obedience but not because he really believes in God. We are hopeful for him and know that if he sincerely desires a belief he will get an answer to his prayers. We fasted with him last Saturday to help him recognize an answer to his prayers. The last time we met him, his mom called the house and said she had someone for us to meet. So after the lesson we met a lady outside, a grandmother, who then took us to meet her daughter who was waiting down the road. However, the daughter (maybe 35yrs old), when she saw us, asked if we were mormon and then got very nervous when we confirmed. She explained that she was a missionary in Nepel for 10 years and her husband is a presbyterian pastor. I was confused why she came to meet us and asked but she just said she didn’t know either and needed to go. I told her she had no reason to be scared, we would be happy to answer any questions she has about our faith. She said no and then said she and her husband were basically praying that we would leave her country. She acted as if we were from the devil and invading her country. I told her we only hoped to serve and help people come closer to the jesus christ that is taught of in the bible that she reads. My companion gave her an article of faith card and we wished her and her hubsand success in their endeavors. I left feeling saddened that she sees us in such a bad light. If she only knew that we are on the same side, working for the same cause, the same christ. Its really a shame. It makes me hope that I am always showing a good example and never giving people a reason to fear us. I respect anyone that has served a mission, our faith or not - especially for 10 years. I just hope she has the same feeling about us. We found a new investigator, a college student, who used to believe in god but fell away a few years ago because of what he sees as conflicts between science and religion. He also told us that he is not happy. He is very sincere and wants to know that god lives and overcome his concerns regarding science. On the funnier side, we ate dinner with some ward members and their 2 year old son peed on the floor as we sat around a little table eating beanpot dessert. The funny part was that he looked right at me to see if I noticed and I had but I didn’t know how to say anything in korean about it so I just started mumbling and gesturing till his mom saw. She then freaked out and took him to the bathroom. Then he ran around naked for awhile and we enjoyed stuffing our selves some more. Anyway, life is good, the weather’s hot, the people are interesting, and the work is the Lord’s. I hope family prayer and scripture study are still going well.
