Church of Multiplication and Capernaum (I)

One of the miracles that Christ did near the shore of the Sea of Galilee was that of feeding the multitude with the loaves and fishes that had to be greatly multiplied to accomplish it. This is commemorated as the multiplication miracle.  This is a 4th Century Mosaic Floor in the Church of Multiplication in Tabgha which is thought to be at the spot of this miracle.

Under the altar is a block of limestone found during excavation and is believed to be the stone on which the 2 fishes and 5 loaves were placed by Jesus.  Matt 14:13-21  Mark 6: 30-44

Nearby on the shore of the Sea of Galilee is the Franciscan Church of the Primacy. This is believed to be the place where Jesus  appeared to his disciples for the third time after His resurrection and told them to cast their net on the right side of their boat . John 21: 1-17

Checking out the temperature of the water in the Sea of Galilee

I'm standing by Sakia, a very nice and religious person, who was on our tour.

It was neat to reflect on Jesus being here and having a fish breakfast with His disciples.

Interior of Church of the Primacy of St. Peter with the rock in front of the altar behind the sign "Mesa Christi" Latin for Table of Christ. According to traditions this is the spot where Jesus is said to have laid out a breakfast of bread and fish for the Apostles and told Peter to "Feed my Sheep" after the miraculous catch.

Capernaum, on the northern shoreline of the Sea of Galilee, was an important Roman town and the place of Christ's teachings in Galilee.  It was also home to a number of His Disciples.

Some ruins of Capernaum with the Franciscan church built over Peter's home.

Columns in Capernaum

Capernaum is mentioned so many times in the scriptures. Matt 4:13, (Jesus made Capernaum "his own city," 18-25 (Jesus calls His Apostles), 8:5,14 (Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law),  Mark 1:21 ( Jesus taught in the synagogue),  Matt 8: 14-17 (Jesus cast out devils, healed the sick, caused the blind to see, etc)  These are just some of the things that Jesus did in Capernuam.

Beautiful  Stone Carvings from Capernaum

The place in Capernaum thought to have been Peter's house.  After's discovery in the 1800's, the Fraanaciscan Fathers bought the site in 1894 and did excavations. They built a modern church over Peter's house. There is a glass floor so you see the ruins of the house.
