The Mount of Beatitudes and The Sea of Galilee (G)

Mount of Beatitudes  This Roman Catholic "Church of the Beatitudes" was built in 1937 of local basalt stone.

This is the area where it is believed that Jesus gave the "Sermon on the Mount" to His disciples. Luke 6:12-49  It is a beautiful and peaceful place overlooking the  northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

In 1986 when the Sea of Galilee was very low, a local fisherman made an extraordinary discovery-the remains of a wooden boat later determined to have been used in the time of Jesus' ministry. It is hard to believe that this is a 2,000 year old boat!

Boat ride on the Sea of Galilee

The boat ride on the Sea of Galilee was one of the highlights of our trip.

These are the group of people who became our good friends..

This is the the same type of wooden boat that we sailed on.

I'm thinking about all the things that happened on this sea during Jesus' ministry. Jesus called several fishermen (Peter, James, John and Andrew) to follow Him.Matt 4:18-22, Mark 1:16-20, 2:13-14, Luke 5:1-11 Jesus spoke to the multitudes from Peter's boat. Mark 3:7-12, Luke 5:1-3 Twice, Jesus commanded his disciples to cast their nets and a  miraculous catch of fish followed. Luke 5:4-11 and John 21:6-8 Today  The Sea of Galilee still has a lot of fish in it. .Jesus commanded the stormy sea to still. Matt 8:23-27, Mark 6:45-52 and Luke 8:22-25 Jesus walked on the sea during the storm. Our guide told us that because of the location of the sea, the high mountains around it and the change in temperatures, there can be sudden and violent storms even thought the waves never get higher then 3 feet.

These two photos show some of the landscape by the shore.

It was a great experience to be on the Sea of Galilee!
